2 Great Lakes sailors accused of carjacking

WAUKEGAN, Ill. — Two sailors stationed at Great Lakes Naval Training Center are accused of carjacking a taxi and setting it on fire.

Terry Edward Gappa of Plymouth, Mass., and Aaron Layne Couch of Monroe, La., are charged with vehicle theft, assault, criminal damage to property and theft of services.

Both were released on $50,000 recognizance bonds and are restricted to the northern Illinois base by the military.

Authorities contend the cabbie was going to drop the pair off at the base Monday night when they threatened to kill him if he didn’t let them drive.

The driver moved to the passenger seat and jumped out as the cab slowed down. He called police, who arrested the sailors a short time later.
