Ex-sailor sentenced for Groton killings

NEW LONDON, Conn. — A former Navy submarine technician is sentenced to 72 years in prison in the strangling deaths of his girlfriend and their 5-month-old daughter in Groton.

Charles A. Davis Jr. was sentenced Wednesday in Superior Court in New London.

He had pleaded guilty last month to strangling 20-year-old Belinda Parker and their 5-month-old daughter, Jalen. The mother and child were killed during an argument in her Groton apartment on Jan. 30, 2004. He had been stationed at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base in Groton at the time.

His attorney said the 25-year-old Davis chose not to be in the courtroom for sentencing. The attorney says Davis is devastated by what he did and could not face his family or that of his girlfriend.
