Gates Gets Nuke Mishandling Report
Gates Gets Nuke Mishandling Report
May 29, 2008
Associated Press

ABOARD A MILITARY AIRCRAFT - Defense Secretary Robert Gates is reviewing a lengthy report on the Pentagon's handling of nuclear-related materials and the military's mistaken shipment of ballistic missile fuses to Taiwan.

Gates received the report and a briefing on the matter this week and is considering recommendations by Navy Adm. Kirkland H. Donald, who was asked to conduct a broad investigation of the delivery foul-up.

Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell, who is traveling with Gates to several Asian countries, said May 28 that the recommendations address what happened in the incident and how well the department safeguards other sensitive components.

Morrell provided no details and would not say whether Donald recommended punishment for any personnel who might have been at fault for the Taiwan mishap.

Gates ordered a full inventory of all nuclear weapons and related materials after the incident, and he told officials with the Air Force, Navy and Defense Logistics Agency to assess inventory control procedures for the materials and to submit a report within 60 days.

1. Do I detect the faint sound of a broom moving waste material underneath a floor covering?
When I mention to some of the people I work with that we sent atomic bomb fuses to Taiwan, they tell me they haven't heard about that. Then they quickly point out that Taiwan is our 'friend' and would not let anything happen to the fuses. Like nobody in Taiwan has any ties to the government of the People's Republic of China.

Then I tell them about the cruise missiles from Minot AFB. The response I get is "Oh yeah, what ever happened to those?" I tell them that we got five of them back already but the sixth one was shipped to Iran. Not to worry though, we should be getting the sixth one back just after the election.
