Mullen: Firings help fix nuclear problems

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. — The recent resignations of the Air Force’s top leaders are big steps toward restoring the service’s nuclear mission, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Michael Mullen, said during an all-hands call here today.

“I have great admiration for them stepping up and taking accountability,” Mullen said, referring to Air Force Secretary Michael W. Wynne and Chief of Staff Gen. T. Michael Moseley, who resigned June 5. “It’s a tremendous example of responsible leadership. Those steps alone go a long way in fixing the problem with regard to the nuclear mission.”

During his first visit to the base near Las Vegas, Mullen reassured the roughly 1,000 airmen gathered in the hangar of the Air Force’s Thunderbirds demonstration team that while he didn’t know when it would happen, there would be continuity when the time comes for Wynne and Moseley to leave their jobs.

“There is nothing more important in what we do than lead,” Mullen said. “We’ve got to figure out how we get this right, how we take care of you. We need to do this across the leadership spectrum.”

When asked about the credibility of the Air Force and what led to such deep cuts in its top leadership, Mullen cited a loss of discipline.
