LEXINGTON, Ky. — Officials at a Kentucky Army depot that houses deadly chemical weapons are confirming the second mustard gas leak in less than two weeks.
A statement from Blue Grass Army Depot said the new leak showed only a low concentration of the blister agent and presents no harm to the community or environment.
The leak announced Wednesday was detected in a separate storage igloo from the one where another leak was detected July 28. Officials said the hot summer temperatures may be partly to blame for the leaks, which were the first in three years.
Mustard is a debilitating agent that produces a breakout of blisters, although it’s usually not fatal. The mustard weapons and others containing sarin are scheduled to be destroyed by 2017 to comply with an international treaty.
