Cherry Point gets new helicopter squadron

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. — A Marine Corps helicopter squadron will be reactivated at a North Carolina air base 13 years after the unit was disbanded in Hawaii.

The military said that Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 366 will be reactivated Sept. 30 at the Marine Corps’ Cherry Point air station at Havelock.

The eight CH-53E Super Stallion transportation helicopters for the squadron are nicknamed “Hammerheads” and will arrive Monday from Marine Corps Air Station New River in Jacksonville.

HMH-366 was based in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, before it was disbanded.
