Deadline approaching for captains to apply for special schools, training

Basic-branch captains in year group 2001 have until early December to submit preferences for special midcareer educational and career developmental opportunities.

The preferences will be used by a panel of officers at Human Resources Command to identify candidates for possible assignment to such programs as the School for Advanced Military Studies, graduate school attendance in conjunction with West Point instructor duty and Intermediate Level Education programs at U.S. and foreign command and staff colleges.

Officers identified by the panel that meets Dec. 9-22 will form a pool of candidates that will be used by assignment managers when they slate officers for schooling and other developmental assignments over the next few years, according to Jack Kendall, chief of HRC's officer leader development division.

A second Leadership Development Panel will meet in March to identify candidates from year group 2002. Specific criteria have not been announced.

Senior Army leaders will analyze the results of these pilot panels, as well as a panel held one year ago, to determine if the system should be used for all year groups as they enter the midpoint in their careers.
