FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Closing arguments are set to begin at Fort Bragg in the military trial of a New York National Guard soldier accused of killing two superior officers in Iraq.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys were expected to begin final arguments Tuesday in the case against Staff Sgt. Alberto Martinez. His court-martial began almost six weeks ago.

Martinez has pleaded not guilty to premeditated murder in the deaths of Capt. Phillip Esposito of Suffern, N.Y., and 1st Lt. Louis Allen of Milford, Pa. Both men died when an anti-personnel mine went off outside their room on a U.S. military base in 2005.

The 41-year-old Martinez faces a possible death sentence if convicted.
