Article 32 for abuse allegations begins

Mideast edition, Tuesday, December 2, 2008

A hearing began Monday into allegations that two U.S. soldiers abused Afghan detainees, military officials say.

The Article 32 hearing reviewed allegations against Capt. Roger T. Hill and 1st Sgt. Tommy L. Scott, both of 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, based in Fort Campbell, Ky.

The hearing, held at Forward Operating Base Salerno in eastern Afghanistan, followed a probe earlier this year.

That probe was "prompted by a report from within the unit," according to a news release issued Monday by Combined Joint Task Force-101.

The men face several other lesser offenses as well. The release did not say what specific charges the men face.
