SEOUL — The U.S. Army’s 2nd Infantry Division last week kicked off its Warfighter exercise — computer-simulated training in which commanders practice responding to military threats in South Korea.

The biennial exercise tests commanders’ responses to battle situations, said Lt. Col. Thomas Traczyk, the chief of plans for the division. It also tests their ability to use available units and equipment to meet different threats, as well as tests the Army’s overall Battle Command System, he said.

The exercise, which takes place in U.S. Army Garrison-Red Cloud, is part of a three-prong effort to keep commanders in South Korea ready despite the quick turnover here, Traczyk said.

Typically, most assignments in South Korea last one year.

Earlier this year, commanders trained in Warpath I and Warpath II, yearly exercises, Traczyk said.
