KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Williams is working through the logistics of getting himself and his three small children from Fort Riley to Washington, D.C., for Barack Obama’s presidential inauguration.
The trip for his wife will be even longer. Staff Sgt. Demetria Williams is traveling from Baghdad, where she is a medic with the 300th Military Police Company at Fort Riley.
Leroy Williams, 36, is from Hampton, Va. He taught special needs children before becoming a soldier. Demetria Williams, 32, from Brooklyn, is studying to become a registered nurse. She’s on her first tour in Iraq.
Demand for tickets to the inauguration are off the charts, but the Williams family will be there, thanks to Sen. Pat Roberts of Kansas.
Williams and his wife had talked about attending the inauguration because “there’s never going to be another ‘first’ black president,” Williams said.
