Pendleton Develops Plan To Make Fresh Water

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — Despite its 17 miles of oceanfront beaches, Camp Pendleton, like much of Southern California and the Southwest, has a water problem. There’s never enough readily available.

So base officials, along with the San Diego County Water Authority, are studying the feasibility of building a seawater desalination plant at the base to provide clean potable water to the region, said Khalique Khan, who directs Pendleton’s office of water resources.

“The goal is to have an alternate source of drinking-water supply to make up for the fresh-water shortage on a regional basis,” Khan said.

The idea is in its early stages, officials said. The project, as initially envisioned, would work like reverse osmosis, taking in seawater and separating it into fresh water and a brine or high saltwater concentrate.

The former could be used for consumption; the latter would be returned to the ocean, Khan said.
