Former Lewis Ranger sentenced in bank robbery

The Associated Press
Posted : Saturday Dec 13, 2008 15:00:57 EST

TACOMA, Wash. — A former Army Ranger from Fort Lewis who led the takeover-style robbery of a Tacoma bank has been sentenced to 24 years in federal prison.

Luke E. Sommer was sentenced Friday by U.S. District Court Judge Franklin Burgess in Tacoma.

Sommer pleaded guilty May 27 to charges including conspiracy, bank robbery and possession of a hand grenade.

Court documents say the 22-year-old from Peachland, British Columbia, recruited two other Army Rangers and two Canadians to rob the Bank of America branch in August 2006. They made off with more than $50,000, and were caught when authorities traced the license plate of the getaway car and found evidence at Fort Lewis.

The other defendants all pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing.
