TAMPA, Fla. — Pat Tillman left his $3.6 million job as a Cardinals safety after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, to join his brother Kevin in enlisting in the Army Rangers to fight terrorism.
Tillman was 27 when he was killed in Afghanistan in a U.S. friendly fire incident. His tragic death was exacerbated by a military cover-up.
Cardinals team president Michael Bidwill said Tuesday he reflects on Tillman at a time like this, knowing the heart-and-soul player he was and how much the Cardinals meant to the 1998 seventh-rounder from Arizona State.
“I do,” Bidwill said. “I think two things. I think he’s looking down right now, and he’s really excited for us. And the second thing, he’s really ticked off that he’s not down here getting ready to play in the Super Bowl.”
Bidwill was asked whether there would be any mention or honor for Tillman during Super Bowl XLIII ceremonies. “I don’t know what the league plan is for that, but we’ve got him in our ring of honor at the University of Phoenix Stadium,” Bidwill said. “We’ve got a great statue in front of our stadium as well. And I know members of his family we’ve invited to come here.”
