TAMPA -- A Special Operations paratrooper died this afternoon after an accident, according to Air Force Col. Larry Martin.

Martin would not name the paratrooper.

City firefighter Matthew Martinez and his friend Joe Cordes sat in a canoe on a lake adjacent to Gadsden Park Thursday morning, a whole day of fishing ahead of them.

About 9:30 a.m., they noticed a group of about 10 paratroopers in the bright blue sky, headed for MacDill Air Force Base, abutting the lake.

Within moments, something seemed wrong. "One was off course," Martinez said.
