Higher-definition Sims Ahead For F-16 Pilots

F-16 pilots — especially those flying Block 40/42 jets — can look forward to practicing their moves in higher definition.

In late January, the Air Force awarded an initial $68.2 million contract to L-3 Link Simulation and Training to develop and build high-fidelity F-16 simulators with Boeing Co.

The first of the new simulators, called mission training centers, should be open by March 2011, said Capt. Jackie Belka, program manager for the project at Air Force Materiel Command’s 677th Aeronautical Systems Group, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

Each training center will have four cockpits enclosed by wrap-around video screens and control consoles for instructors.

The pilots benefiting the most will be those flying Block 40 and 42 versions of F-16s whose simulators do not have 360-degree video screens and can’t connect with simulators at other bases. These pilots primarily use simulators to practice cockpit procedures such as following checklists for flight emergencies.
