Man wanted by Navy for desertion arrested

LEXINGTON, N.C. — A Virginia man wanted by the Navy for desertion has waived extradition after a court appearance in North Carolina.

An operations officer at the Davidson County jail said 25-year-old Robert Lee Leassears of Chesapeake, Va., waived extradition during his first appearance Tuesday afternoon. The officer didn’t know when Leassears would be returned to Virginia.

The sheriff’s office issued a statement saying deputies with the Interstate Criminal Enforcement Unit stopped a Mercury Grand Marquis for traffic violations on Interstate 85 late Monday night outside Lexington.

The statement said deputies discovered that Leassears was wanted by the Navy.

Leassears’ warrant said he was a painter at a naval shipyard in Chesapeake.
