Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. — Pilots flying at the Red Flag aerial exercise at Nellis Air Force Base find themselves under numerous restrictions that could cramp their style.

Red Flag’s combat scenarios take place over the Nevada Test and Training Range, a classified range northwest of Las Vegas.

Parts of the range are no-fly zones, and others have strict regulations governing the use of chaff and flares, as well as altitude and speed.

Pilots flying to the fight must pass through a number of zones in the range with varying regulations, making just arriving at the hot zone a challenge, said Lt. Col. Paul Johnson, Red Flag’s director of operations.

International pilots participating in the exercise face even greater restrictions because parts of the air space are off limits for non-Americans.
