First Army troops honor Black History Month
Staff report

More than 250 soldiers and civilians assigned to First Army spent their lunch hour Feb. 23 celebrating the conclusion of Black History Month with former U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young.

The pastor, civil rights leader and former mayor of Atlanta was invited to be keynote speaker at the First Army luncheon in Forest Park, Ga., and told the group that the military, more than any other organization in the U.S., has met with extraordinary success in bringing people of all backgrounds together.

In a First Army news release, Young said celebrating unity together is the message the world needs.

“Bringing people together to solve crises is essential to the American way of life,” Young said in the release.

President Harry S. Truman, Young told the crowd, understood that the military had to be united if the country was going to be united, “and nobody has done as good a job — not the church, not the universities, not business, not organized labor — that the United States military has done in bringing people of this country together to solve crises, and I want to thank you for continuing that tradition. I want you to understand that it’s not an accident, but it’s absolutely essential to the American way of life,” he said in the release.
