2 Marines remain in hospital after bus wreck

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — All but two of 13 North Carolina-based Marines involved in a three-bus pileup Thursday morning have been treated and released from Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital.

One of the two Marines was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, a city about 50 miles south of Lejeune, for observation, said Capt. Clark Carpenter, a spokesman for the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, whose Marines were injured in the accident. Both Marines are in stable condition, he said.

The Marines were with a group of 59 leathernecks and one sailor riding in three charter buses bound for Norfolk, Va., when the crash occurred near Maysville in Jones County, which is immediately north of Onslow County, home to Lejeune.

“They were going to Norfolk Naval Base to load the ships of the Bataan Strike Group,” Carpenter said.

A North Carolina Highway patrol trooper told The Daily News of Jacksonville that the third bus in the convoy failed to stop as the first two buses waited for a car in front of them to make a left turn into a private driveway. The third bus hit the second bus in line, causing a chain-reaction crash involving seven vehicles.
