3rd LCS to be named Fort Worth

The third littoral combat ship will be named for the city of Fort Worth, Texas, the Navy secretary’s office announced Friday.

A new type of warship, the fast and agile LCS is intended to fight in shallow water with various warfare mission modules. The LCS family has two hull types, a semiplaning monohull built by Lockheed Martin and a trimaran being built by General Dynamics.

It’s not clear which design Fort Worth will take.

“There’s no decision,” said Cmdr. Cappy Surette, a Navy spokesman at the Pentagon. “The contract is still being worked out.”

The ships are named for American towns with patriotic names or histories. The first, Freedom, was commissioned Nov. 8 in Milwaukee, Wis. The second ship, Independence, is expected to be delivered to the Navy this year.

1. Wow. One's called 'Freedom' and another 'Fort Worth'? 'Patriotic' towns? What a loser class.

It's a pitful attempt to get hull numbers up, or we'll sell them to Taiwan within 5 years.

2. The LCS is another one of the Deepwater failures.

They had originally ordered 4 of these at $200 million a pop. About halfway thru the build the cost went up to $600 million a pop and the government canceled the program at two ships.

The DDG-1000 Zumwalt destroyers were canceled when the cost on these bad boys rose to $5.3 billion each. If you try to put it in perspective, this destroyer cost more than any of the Nimitz-class aircraft carriers except the G. H. W. Bush at $6.3 billion.
