WASHINGTON — A large contingent of Fort Campbell-area community leaders fanned out across congressional offices Wednesday to promote support for the post, military families and two construction projects totaling more than $28 million.

“It’s always important to be eyeball to eyeball with your congressional delegation,” said Jack Turner, who has been on more than a dozen of the annual trips.

A total of 55 public officials and businesses leaders — including 32 representing Clarksville and the Montgomery County area — began a packed two-day schedule with a breakfast meeting with Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Brentwood, in an ornate room at the Library of Congress.

The Tennessee delegates were then scheduled to meet with the other eight Tennessee House members or their staffs, and Republican Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker.

Thursday morning, the delegates — who pay their own travel expenses — are to tour Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where they will visit injured soldiers from units based at Fort Campbell.
