Budget Cuts Could Delay Tanker Deal
Budget Cuts Could Delay Tanker Deal

The Pentagon is considering a delay in replacing the Air Force's aging fleet of aerial refueling tankers, reports said Tuesday.

The five-year delay is among several suggestions by budget officials, who also suggested canceling the airborne laser program. Boeing Wichita does work on the airborne laser program and could receive work on the tanker program.

A tanker delay would be bitterly contested by Congress, Rep. Todd Tiahrt, R-Goddard, said Tuesday.

"Instead of advocating to delay what the Air Force has determined is its number one procurement need, President Obama should be using his position to move the process forward in a timely manner," Tiahrt said in a statement.

Rep. Jerry Moran, R-Hays, also urged Obama not to delay bidding on a new tanker contract.
