Two medical units within U.S. Army Europe were identified for 12-month deployments to Afghanistan this spring as part of fiscal year 2009 regular force rotations.

The headquarters element of the 30th Medical Command, based in Heidelberg, Germany, is expected to command and control all echelon above brigade combat team medical units in U.S. Forces Afghanistan, as well as provide medical policy and oversight for all of USFOR-A, according to a USAREUR press release.

The 67th Forward Surgical Team, based in Miesau, Germany, is expected to provide life-saving surgery in support of battlefield casualties, the release said.
