Ex-Marine charged in Utah bank robbery

SALT LAKE CITY — An Iraq war veteran and former Marine has made an initial appearance in federal court on a bank robbery charge.

A federal magistrate Friday ordered Codie D. Carver to remain in custody until a detention hearing March 17. An arraignment is scheduled for March 20.

Federal prosecutors charged Carver with one count of bank robbery in a Monday heist at a Washington Mutual Bank branch in Sandy. The charge carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison.

Carver surrendered to police Thursday. Beforehand, Carver told the Deseret News he hired someone to carry out the robbery and gave his share of the stolen money to the homeless in Las Vegas.

Carver’s family says he spent a year in Iraq and has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
