Navy extends comment period on Ore. training

COOS BAY, Ore. — The Navy has says it has again extended the public comment period about a plan to expand its training activities off the Oregon Coast.

The comment period will extend now to April 13.

The Navy wants to schedule more training flights, add a dummy minefield-avoidance training course, and increase the use of sonar.

Fishermen worry about debris tearing up nets and about reduced access to fishing grounds. Environmental groups say the increased use of sonar will harm whales and other marine mammals.
