Death of CG Academy coach ruled a suicide

NEW LONDON, Conn. — The state’s medical examiner says the death of the women’s basketball coach at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy is a suicide.

The medical examiner’s office says 52-year-old Alex Simonka’s death was caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Coast Guard officials say Simonka was found dead in his car at the academy Saturday night. He was the women’s basketball coach and athletics business manager.

Authorities say Simonka, a Ledyard resident, was a member of the academy’s Class of 1979 and retired from active duty in 1999. He was the women’s basketball coach for the last 16 years.

Investigators say Simonka was scheduled to visit family in New Jersey this weekend and when he didn’t show up, his family called the academy.
