Army: Missing GI ID’d on bank videotape

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A 39-year-old Spartanburg soldier is being given 30 days to return to her basic training unit at Fort Jackson before being declared a deserter, an Army spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Military police began an investigation into the disappearance of Pvt. Danielle Williams after family members expressed concern for her safety, spokeswoman Karen Soule said.

Williams’ commander declared her absent without leave March 7 after she failed to return to her unit after a dental appointment on Fort Jackson.

The Army dropped its investigation after a family member Monday evening identified Williams in two videotapes showing her withdrawing cash from her own bank account. One was taken at a local store near Fort Jackson on March 9 and a second tape was from a local bank on March 10, Soule said.

“The reason the military police got involved was that the family expressed concern for her safety,” Soule said. “They were concerned that someone else might have her bank card. The tapes showed she was the one withdrawing the money.”
