SAN DIEGO — Two sailors have recovered from injuries suffered when a fire erupted while they were refueling a Marine Corps helicopter Friday aboard the amphibious assault ship Boxer, a Navy spokesman said.

The sailors, who were not identified, were treated by Boxer’s medical department and were later released, Lt. Nate Christensen, a spokesman with U.S. Naval Forces-Central Command and U.S. 5th Fleet in Bahrain, said Tuesday by e-mail. Both sailors “are fully recovered,” Christensen said.

The sailors were on Boxer’s flight deck refueling an AH-1W Super Cobra helicopter about 4:15 p.m. Friday when the fire broke out, officials said. The ship was in the Gulf of Aden at the time.

The incident is under investigation.

The San Diego-based Boxer is carrying members of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which includes Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 163 (Reinforced). The ship is serving as the flagship for Coalition Task Force 151, which is conducting maritime security operations in the region.
