Eielson Air Guard readies for deployment (AK ANG)
Associated Press
Article Last Updated: 02/19/2007 12:47:03 PM AKST

Six airmen based at Eielson Air Force Base are getting ready to leave for a six-month deployment to Iraq. The half-dozen airmen are from the 168th Security Forces Squadron of the Alaska Air National Guard. It's the fourth combat deployment for the squadron since military operations began after the September 11th East Coast terror attacks and the unit's second tour to Iraq.

The squadron's commanding officer, Major Carl Alvarez, says the airmen will provide defense for air bases in Iraq. The unit was notified of its assignment in mid-October. In January, the airmen conducted 50-caliber machine gun training in Nevada. The airmen will leave Fairbanks on Tuesday night.

2. Talk about extremes...
Current Fairbanks weather is minus 26 degrees; in Baghdad it's 70. Not too bad -- only a 100 degree difference. When I lived there in 1994 it was minus 45 in Fairbanks and 80 in Palm Springs (my previous home) on the same day.

3. The pentagon says
that the serbs better not attack bosnia and kosovo again because the army and marines might be tied down in iraq but the air force is hardly doing anything.

4. Thanks for posting these deployments in this forum.
Having them all in one place makes it easier to get the 'big picture.'
