First look at Navy’s new throwback uniforms

About 150 sailors will get to wear-test new "throwback" dress khakis beginning in late fall or early winter, officials said. About 75 will wear-test changes to the white crackerjacks. And another 50 will model changes to blues.

Sailors in the fleet could think they’re on a Hollywood set when the Navy begins wear-testing a venerable old uniform and test-driving fixes for two existing uniforms.

Wear tests are scheduled to begin by late fall or early winter for a “throwback” service dress khaki uniform, along with improved blue and white crackerjacks, said Robert B. Carroll, director of the Navy Uniform Matters Office in Arlington, Va.

Just more than 100 officers and chiefs will get the chance to test the throwback dress khaki look. And the tests will be quick, too, lasting no more than 100 days, officials said.

Testing locations will be Washington, D.C.; Norfolk, Va.; Millington, Tenn.; and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

What’s being tested is really an updated version of the Navy’s iconic, World War II-era dress khaki uniform, nixed by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Elmo Zumwalt in the 1970s.

uhc comment: I'm asking myself why do we need WWII uniforms in the 21st century? Is it because we won The Big One? Or maybe if we change the uniform we can evoke the good old days?

1. follow the money
Who's getting the contract to make hundreds of thousands of new uniforms all at once?

Just asking.

7. for now
They'll test drive them. Then they'll approve them. Then ka-ching.

It's happened a couple of times here in Canada over the last 20 years or so. (making all forces the same, then making them different again)

If Haliburton can charge megabucks for laundry, what will the supplier (even assuming that it's not another no-bid contract like your gov't likes to hand out) get for this?

It's also another illustration of their real priorities. They'll make things look pretty for the cameras but what will they do for the real needs of the people? Bupkes.

4. The navy never should have gotten rid of the khaki jacket. The jumper looks much better...

than that currently in service. The cuffs are a vast improvement over the current whites where the sleeves are too long and too baggy on most sailors so they look like pyjamas.

As for officers, the navy was the only service without a summer jacket. The black worn all year round looks terrible in tropical Washington, DC, yet the tropical, white, long looks too informal when other service officers are in jackets with ties.

This is an improvement.

6. God I love that Khaki Uniform
CPO's will be wearing something similar. The Navy continues to have the best, sharpest, most chick magnet like uniforms of all our services. As if a Sailor needed a uniform to get the chicks. Thanks for the post and the stroll down memory lane.

8. This summer jumper looks like a crackerjack, rather than jammies...
My dad wore the khaki jacket the very last day it was regulation. We always called it his Capt. Binghampton jacket.

It's very 'Nimitz'.
