BAGHDAD — A roadside bomb targeted a U.S. military convoy Wednesday in Baghdad, killing an Iraqi bystander and wounding three others, police said as attack helicopters buzzed over central Baghdad.

The explosion, which occurred shortly after 3 p.m. in the predominantly Shiite neighborhood of Karradah, damaged a Humvee, a police officer said. The military had no immediate comment, and no American casualties were reported.

Soldiers quickly sealed off the area, and Apache helicopters circled the area to provide support.

Another roadside bomb targeted an American convoy in eastern Baghdad, police said, but no casualties were reported.

Also Wednesday, three Katyousha rockets hit a home in a residential area of the mostly Sunni northern town of Tal Afar, 260 miles northwest of Baghdad, killing five family members from the Turkoman minority, three men and two women.

Four next-door neighbors, also Turkoman, were wounded. The motive for the late afternoon attack was not known, Tal-Afar official Najim Abdullah said.
