Soldier hurt in accidental shooting at Drum
Soldier hurt in accidental shooting at Drum
Staff report
Posted : Thursday Oct 11, 2007 11:46:21 EDT

A 10th Mountain Division soldier was injured Wednesday at Fort Drum, N.Y., when another soldier’s personal handgun accidentally discharged in a barracks room, the Army announced in a press release.

The injured soldier, who is assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, was shot in the upper torso sometime before 10 p.m. He was taken to Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, where he continues to receive treatment for nonlife-threatening injuries, the release stated.

Fort Drum Military Police responded to the incident and confiscated the weapon and ammunition.

The soldier who owns the weapon is under the control of his chain of command pending the results of an investigation.

uhc comment: Back in the sixties and seventies, we weren't allowed to have ammo in the barracks for precisely this reason. Nothing like booze/drugs and loaded weapons to help you pass a quite evening.

1. What kind of handgun would that have been?
I think they've phased out the trusty old Model 1911s by now.

2. I think the trusty of M1911 has been replaced by a 9mm Baretta.
Perhaps some of the newer folks can verify that.

3. Gotta 1911 right here
It's set up just like the ones I was issued, with the web belt, holster, and a couple of clip pouches. It's almost 100 years old and still works like a charm.

4. Current military and Ft Drum regs prohibit the storage of personal weapons
in the barracks. He is probably looking at some sort of UCMJ punishment for violating the regulations.

On post housing yes, barracks no.
