The Air Force is putting the brakes on cutting the number of public affairs positions.

The Air Force Personnel Center announced Monday that public affairs officers could not apply for voluntary separation pay incentives. The enticement offers other officers with at least 12 years of service and not more than 15 years, a bonus worth three times their base salary to leave the service.

But the Air Force now recognizes that public affairs offices are understaffed and many public affairs officers are deploying for six months. So the service also has taken public affairs off the list of career fields where lieutenants commissioned in 2005 will face a force shaping board in 2008.

In 2006 and 2007, public affairs was one of many career fields that saw lieutenants sent packing because the service believed there were too many public relations specialists.

The number of public affairs officers dove from 470 in 2005 to 275 today.
