Benning soldiers find bomb materials
Benning soldiers find bomb materials
Staff report

A large cache of materials used for making the explosively formed projectiles that have killed scores of U.S. troops was discovered Wednesday by 3rd Infantry Division soldiers, the Army said in a press release.

Soldiers with 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor, 3rd Brigade Combat Team from Fort Benning, Ga., who are operationally attached to 4th BCT, 25th Infantry Division, discovered more than 100 copper disks used to construct the lethal EFPs in Babil province east of Haswah during a follow-up mission to Operation Seven Mountains.

“This is a great find. It feels awesome to know that these EFPs will never see the streets,” squad leader Staff Sgt. Joseph Lagas, said in the release. “It actually feels like we’re making a difference when we capture this much stuff.”

During Operation Seven Mountains, the release sated, soldiers on Tuesday captured a militant suspected of constructing and planting EFPs in North Babil. They also discovered EFPs, homemade explosives, and blocks of C4 hidden in a drainage ditch and canal.

The two caches combined are one of the largest EFP caches discovered in North Babil in more than a year, the release said.

EFPs are a particularly deadly type of roadside bomb used by Shiite extremist groups.
