Landing field process tainted, lawmaker says

RALEIGH, N.C. — Senate leader Marc Basnight says “untruths” have built distrust between North Carolina officials and Navy leaders seeking to build a practice landing field in the state.

In a letter, Basnight writes to a state panel studying the Navy’s proposed outlying landing field. He says that the Navy’s current ideas for building in the eastern part of state are “absolutely unacceptable.”

The Democrat from Dare County says the sites pose a danger to public safety, public health, the environment and the property rights of people living nearby. He suggests that the Navy pursue an offshore training platform to practice landings.

The Navy has been seeking a site for six years for fighter jets based in North Carolina and Virginia.
