745 lieutenants at risk to be cut next year

Because the Air Force is still overstocked with lieutenants, the service plans to cut next year about 140 O-2s commissioned in 2005.

And while the Air Force has not officially identified which career fields are targeted for force shaping, figures on the career fields that are overmanned with junior officers show the impact will hit diverse Air Force Specialty Codes.

Among the career fields likely to be cut are research-related positions, communications, personnel/manpower and air traffic control. As of Oct. 20, the Air Force was overstocked by 138 lieutenants from the 2005 commissioning group. About 1,200 lieutenants commissioned in 2005 are in career fields now listed as overmanned. Of those, 463 are exempt from cuts, leaving 745 junior officers at risk.

Career fields that are not overmanned with lieutenants include aircrew positions, medical specialists and judge advocates.

The Air Force intends to issue its list of career fields that will face force-shaping boards in December, service spokesman Capt. Thomas Wenz said.

Until then, the Air Force is waiting to see how many lieutenants in overmanned AFSCs volunteer to leave in exchange for waiving their service commitments — meaning airmen who went to college on ROTC scholarships or to the Air Force Academy can get out without penalty.

uhc comment: $$$ must be getting tight. First the Air Force isn't getting any more F-22s and C-17s in 2009, and now they are cutting the people budget. They could save a few bucks if they would stop advertising on Spike for more fodder. . .
