The coming year will bring new uniforms, career rules and benefits to sailors and new ships and missions to the fleet.

1. New uniforms

For every officer and enlisted sailor, 2008 will begin the biggest uniform shift in the history of the Navy.

Everyone will get the new Navy Working Uniform, a battle-dress-style uniform with a blue, black and gray digital camouflage pattern and an eight-point cover to replace dungarees and wash-khaki uniforms.

Although coveralls were supposed to be replaced by the NWU, officials have spared the much-loved, comfortable uniform.

uhc comment: I love the way these guys list things in order of priority. Number 1 - new uniforms, #3 - IA here to stay (you're going to Iraq), #5 - downsize the Navy by 6,497 people, #6 - Africom.

1. Nice...

My niece is not re-enlisting when her hitch is up in March. She told me that if she re-enlists, she will be stationed in Iraq, pulling some sort of guard duty or doing convoy escort. WTF? She is a well qualified ordinance handler on the "Ronald Reagan". But they are basically giving her the heave ho because of this policy. Does she have it correct? Is that what they are doing with our sailors?

(your link to the navytimes article didn't work for me)

2. The military rags have dynamic linking which sometimes does not work.
The top link in the OP gets you to the article.

Both the Navy and the Air Force are downsizing to buy new war machinery. The Navy is pissing and moaning about the cancellation of their LCS program, and the Air Force is whining about cessation of the $330,000,000 F-22 Raptor program (and they're still trying to get the $239,000,000 F-35 to fly above 40,000 feet.)

Good for your niece.
