More days off for war-zone service

More than 2,000 airmen are due extra time off. If you’ve been deployed for more than 12 months in support of operations Iraqi Freedom or Enduring Freedom out of the past three years, there is a good chance you qualify for additional days off.

How many days you get off is determined by how long you deployed.

For example, an airman who spent 12 months in Afghanistan gets one additional day off. An airman who deployed to Iraq for six months, then six months to Diego Garcia followed by six months to Qatar qualifies for eight days off.

Deployments to other operations such as missions in South Korea and South America cannot be counted.

The program — officially called the Post Deployment/Mobilization Respite Absence — was mandated a year ago by the Defense Department to compensate service members whose deployments exceeded the department’s rotation policies.
