Don’t miss a true punk-rock philosopher perform and speak about his life as a humanist musician and scientist! Greg Graffin, the lead singer and songwriter for seminal punk band Bad Religion, will receive the 2008 Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award in Cultural Humanism. Graffin, who is also a life sciences professor at UCLA and an expert in religious belief among scientists, will speak about his experience in music and science and his views on humanism in general. The award, presented last year to novelist Salman Rushdie (photos here), is sponsored by the Humanist Chaplaincy and Harvard Secular Society. Graffin will follow his acceptance speech with an acoustic performance and a question and answer session. Tickets are available now from the Harvard Box Office: $5 for students, $10 for the general public.

Greg Graffin lauded for humanism, atheism, polysyllabism

Wow, so that bro core piece really touched a nerve out there. For now though, let’s put aside our genre hair-splitting and celebrate some more good news from the punk world. The Humanist Chaplaincy, a Harvard University organization honoring cultural and scientific work by the openly non-religious, will present its Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award in Cultural Humanism to Bad Religion singer/UCLA biology professor Greg Graffin. Last year’s recipient was “The Satanic Verses” author Salman Rushdie, who knows a thing or two about the dangers of religious fanaticism. Graffin will perform an acoustic set after the ceremony, so for you Harvard kids out there, here’s your best chance to yell “We’re Only Gonna Die!” in the school chapel outside of finals week.

2. That is really, really cool.
I'm not a fan of Bad Religion (or punk rock in general - it's just not my style), but Graffin sounds like a very cool guy. I may see if I can talk my wife into going.
