Florida: What age of enlightenment?
Magic trick costs teacher job

Janie PorterLand 'O Lakes, Florida -- The stories in the news about inappropriate relationships between teachers and students have been overwhelming. There was even a substitute teacher in New Port Richey who got in trouble after investigators say she had a relationship with an underage student.

Well, another Pasco County substitute teacher's job is on the line, but this time it's because of a magic trick.

The charge from the school district — Wizardry!

Substitute teacher Jim Piculas does a 30-second magic trick where a toothpick disappears then reappears.

:wtf:
It doesn't say so, but it must be fundies who came up with this ridiculous charge...
BTW, the comments on the story are priceless.

2. Crazy
that's the only word for it...now at first I thought to myself that there must be more to the story that given all the details it wouldn't sound as crazy as it does, but this statement makes me wonder :

"Tampa Bay's 10 talked to the assistant superintendent with the Pasco County School District who said it wasn't just the wizardry and that Picular had other performance issues, including "not following lesson plans" and allowing students to play on unapproved computers.""

"Wasn't just the wizardry"??? Just the Wizardry? If there were problems with the teacher then that is one thing "wizardry" should not even make the list.

:banghead:

3. Much of Florida has gone just plain nuts
I think the steam bath climate and relentless sun bakes people's brains.

I can think of nothing else to account for the sheer volume of news of the weird that comes out of that one state, and people outside the state only hear about a tenth of it.

Now you know why I sold a house with a pool in Florida in favor of a crummy little house in a bad part of NM.

4. There might be more to the story
I enjoy a good "crazy Florida" facepalm as much as anyone, but the "wizardry" claim comes from the teacher himself. The story says that the assistant superintendent claims there were other "performance issues" with the guy, and the only direct quote about wizardry is from the teacher, who is obviously going to spin the story his way.
