"Be nice now!" "Wait for it!"
Y'all probably know the thread I mean, in LBN. I saw a couple of you responding. I don't really want to kick the thread anymore...though kicking the OP and a few posters did occur to me. (Can I say that?) So I will complain here.

The more I think about the implications, the more that thread pisses me off. It would never even cross my mind to make light of such a horrific tragedy as having a child die. ANYBODY's child.

I've seen some horrible things here in Egypt and it never crossed my mind to snark about Islam. I was out for a walk one day and came on an accident scene where a woman had been run over and killed crossing the street. That happens with depressing regularity here. Right down the street from my apartment, a married couple were both run over and killed at the same time.

Out in one of the little villages I drive thru going to work, last winter one poor man lost his entire family when a gas heater malfunctioned. His son, daughter-in-law, their 3-year-old daughter and his wife, who was visiting them. All dead in one night. I just can't imagine going thru that.

I don't think I even want to imagine the kind of mentality that could expect snark about such a horror, either.

1. I responded
Probably shouldn't have. In a way, the "wait for the mean atheists" prediction becomes self-fulfilling, because after we've answered the charge, they get to parade the persecution they crave.

To me, someone who would display schadenfreude at this tragedy, and someone who would exploit it to have a dig at other DUers, are equally contemptible.

3. That was an excellent response
sad that it had to have been made at all in a thread on such a tragedy. It's nearly overwhelming just trying to imagine the pain that family must be going through right now.

2. I peeked into Late Breaking News...

On edit: Never mind. Saw it. That's ridiculous. I can't see any atheist reveling in the suffering of another person. If they do they're beneath contempt.

4. Ugh.
Just yesterday, I met a young lady that was severely injured in an accident. Her family is very religious.
So, I guess as an atheist I should have taken the opportunity to use her tragedy to mock their faith?

:grr:

5. Of course
It's part of our creed. Didn't you get the secret decoder ring for "The God Delusion"?

6. NO! Dammit!
I always get screwed.
No toy in my Captain Crunch...
No prize in my Cracker Jacks...
I've never won the lottery...

It's a good thing I don't believe in god, or I'd think he was out to get me.

7. Perhaps you're not a TRUE atheist at all!
Perhaps... you're... a SPY! Shuuunnnnn-ah!

I see there's been a sharp uptick in whining in R/T again, people clambering up onto their crosses and shouting about Stalin. Someone ought to plot this against world events, phases of the moon etc, see if there's a pattern.

9. Maybe I don't have the decoder ring but I watched 'Life of Brian' last night.
Do I get any Atheist cred for that?

Actually, I wasn't really watching, but listening to the commentary by Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam and Eric Idle.

Gilliam makes an interesting observation about the film. That it manages to encapsulate the histories of western religion - like the confusion and fighting over what is said and what is believed. Or attacking anyone who doesn't believe the right thing.

Eric Idle said it wasn't blasphemy but heresy. Since it was more attacking the character of organized religion. Denying the authority of the Church over the individual. Sort of a Buddhist view of the Church (apparently the Dali Llama loved the movie).

10. Dang, Onager. You made me look.
When I saw the topic, I was tempted to make a nice comment - it is tragic. But the pre-emptive Xtian carpet bombing killed my finer impulses.

Do you think they get the "pot/kettle" thing going on there?

12. Any excuse to drag a cross about
So sad how many feel they need to invite persecution. Like an addictive drug that stuff.
