Leftist science fiction and fantasy authors?
Edited on Sun Dec-06-09 11:45 AM by StarfarerBill
Always on the lookout for explicitly-leftist SF and fantasy writers of whom I've previously been unaware, I'm posting here to find out who you all would recommend.

The list of authors I've read have so far:

Iain M. Banks
John Brunner
Samuel R. Delany
Harlan Ellison
Ursula K. Le Guin
Ken MacLeod
Ian McDonald
China Mieville
Michael Moorcock
Frederik Pohl
Kim Stanley Robinson
Joanna Russ
Olaf Stapledon
H. G. Wells

Thanks in advance for your help. :)

13. Do you write?
Hi. I too am an aspiring Sci-fi writer. I'm working on something right now. It's my first big project. But even though I'm a HUGE leftists, I can't say there is anything leftist about my story. It's called RocketGirl and it's about a modern young woman 17 years old from our day and age who finds herself in an adventure into yesterday's tomorrow, or future past. What I'm saying is that she's transported to a world where all the sci-fi of the 1930's comes alive in a rip-roaring adventure somewhere between pulp fiction of the original Buck Rogers novel and the RKO film serials of Buster Crabb's Flash Gordon. What are you writing?

14. Oodles
I've been published, mostly novels. Science fiction, horror, and mysteries.

Decades ago, early in my career, I was published by some big houses. As time went by and my sales numbers declined, I was published by small houses. It's a common story -- the publishing career death spiral.

But any day, now ...

16. He's a Libertarian, but leans Dem
Brin is first and foremost a Libertarian, but will often support the Democrats when push comes to shove.

3. how about
Phillip K. Dick? I'm not certain if he was explicitly leftist, but I would definitely say he was virulently anti-fascist.

Norman Spinrad? Equally anti-fascist (his The Iron Dream is a must-read, as is Child of Fortune).

Bruce Sterling?

Neal Stephenson?

And who could forget George Orwell?

he's a proclaimed Trotskyite. Lots of subtle leftist politics and cultural commentary in his books.

12. You've identified these folks as leftist from something other than their work, presumably.
Because I know most of those authors and it ain't exactly obvious from their fiction.

15. David Gerrold
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Gerrold

He's perhaps best known for the fact that the first work he sold was the script for the Star Trek episode "The Trouble With Tribbles."

His writings touch on a number of liberal topics, and are strongly informed by his open homosexuality and his struggle to adopt a child as a single gay man.

18. Orson Scott Card
Just kidding!

In all seriousness, John Barnes and Spider Robinson fit your description, although Robinson teeters towards the Libertarian "anything goes" side. I'd also probably include Steven R Donaldon on the list. Just based on their writings.
