There is no litmus test that says someone is more special than someone else. I think you have a good heart and you obviously care about the direction this country is taking. Well, that is what we need right now. Go forward.
I used to annoy people in the group all the time by asking the question, "What do you believe in"? It sounds like a silly, navel-gazing question, almost too ethereal to discuss. It's not that way. Your own beliefs are what protect you when the shit goes down. This is the core of who you are, why you care about this stuff and why it hurts when things don't go they way you think they will.
So it is now. What do you believe in? I believe that the government has a role in helping people in education, health care, making sure there is a foundation for jobs and fair wages and good work conditions and so forth. I believe the US should act in a certain way in the greater world. These things I believe in, human rights, help for people in times of crisis and so forth, go beyond me. They go beyond the individuals I vote for. They are forever.
I have always believed that I am a link in a chain. I am a little point that connects all that came before me and all that will come after me. It is my job to be that link, to uphold the good of what has come before and make sure it is strengthened and passed on to those who come after me. That's it. No big huge description of noble and big things. I am just a little link in a chain. But without me, the chain is broken. I do my little part and things go on.
I am very fortunate in Massachusetts. I think Sen. Kennedy believes this too! I think that's what makes him such a happy guy to be around. (Seriously, when you are with Teddy K, you are going to have some fun.) Look at everything he has been through, the abyss he almost fell into and how he got back and found his dedication again. He knows that the only way you ever really fail is to quit. The fight is eternal, it never stops. There is never a point at which you can say, well this one person got elected so the fight stops cuz all is well. That never happens. The fight is eternal. It never stops.
I think my other Senator knows that as well. The fight against this unjust and immoral war is a sign of that. So is the fight to help the environment and to secure veteran's rights and health care and all the other 'good things' that he is fighting for. I think he understands that the fight never stops, even when there are setbacks, and that you go do what you can do. Then, I hope you find a way, like Teddy K, to do so with some joy and happiness and with friends. Cuz, you know, it never stops. And we need all the links in the chain we can get.
