The work is titled, "This Moment on Earth," which comes as a surprise.

Given the subject and Mrs. Kerry's penchant for a particular phrase, I was expecting something along the lines of "Saving the Planet: When Push Comes to Shove It."

It goes on to try and compare it to Gore's work and the writer does his best to relay that it isn't worth reading. This is the jerk that Teresa told to shove it. And, he rightly deserved that and more.

I have edited to remove the link. I don't want to provide them with any additonal PR. PM me and I will provide you the link.

I am going to write a letter to the editor on this. I think it deserves a rebuttal.

1. Thank you for taking this on
I saw that steaming pile o' crap.

Among other things, he starts out by describing the book as being "on the impending threat of global environmental calamity." (emphasis added)

Um, not exactly.....if one just reads the excerpts posted at johnkerry.com, it's quite clear that at least some of what is in the book talks about currently occurring environmental calamities.

But I guess we can't expect even the slightest exercise of rational thinking from the wingers at that paper.

(Okay, this is a mild example. I think you already covered pretty well the cookie cutter right wing talking point usage.)

Thanks for responding to these jerks.

2. Thanks.
I have decided to try and present and promote the book in a very positive way and mostly ignore this papers ignorance. They want us to attack the messenger, but I have played this game with them too often to know it goes nowhere. They should have reviewed the book for its worth and not attack the authors.

9. Sales figures...
I was on the phone with the publisher the other day, and I was informed that after the national e-mail went out to the entire mailing list, the book jumped considerably on Amazon.com's sales ranking list over the course of the day. Like, the change was immediate and noticeable.

I don't know what this paper said about sales figures, and don't really want to read it, but if it were doomed to be a dud, the mailing list would've responded in kind.

10. This paper has a personal anti-Kerry slant. Actually, they are vile to any Democrat.
Edited on Wed Mar-21-07 11:31 AM by wisteria
Teresa had told the editor to shove it back in 2004 (Rightly so, IMO). The paper's owner put big money into the impeachment of Clinton and uses this paper as a soap box to spread his views far and wide in the area. This trash paper- or as other refer to it as- this republican rag paper- is the dominant paper in Western PA. They do not even try to mask their hatred of Dem's, they celebrate it and print whatever they feel like.

Sales of the book were irrelevant other than to make a point. The piece was comparing apples to candy in this case.

PS. I am happy to see the book is selling well.

I had a co-worker who went to work for them and she was forced to buy this rag. They deducted it from her pay.

14. Hard to say.
I hate about 90% of the Trib, but because they are a smaller paper, they have a really nice arts and society section that covers, for example, a lot of smaller events with up-and-coming artists that isn't partisan.

What's insidious about the Trib isn't that it's a RW rag, but that it's a RW rag posing as a "hometown" paper.

Bashing the Kerrys

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Sen. John Kerry's and Mrs. Heinz-Kerry's new book, "This Moment on Earth," has not even received a review, and yet Eric Heyl saw fit to criticize the book based on the authors and the subject matter ("Global snoring inspired by Kerrys," March 18 and PghTrib.com).

I hope his comments will not deter others from reading what will be an interesting and thoughtful book by two people who have a shared interest and concern for environmental issues.

Sen. Kerry has one of the highest lifetime scores from the League of Conservation Voters and his involvement in environmental issues dates back to the 1970s. And Mrs. Heinz-Kerry has received the Albert Schweitzer Gold Medal for Humanitarianism for her work protecting the environment.

However, this book actually recognizes and honors other Americans of all walks of life who have taken on the challenge of protecting our children, our future and our planet. These dedicated people are given an opportunity to tell their stories in this book.

All this information is available at an easy-to-find Web site. Unfortunately Mr. Heyl did not bother to check, intent on just finding fault with the book.

5. Yes, that is mine. Thanks for noticing.
They published it quickly. When a letter is written criticizing them, they usually wait until the subject matter isn't timely before printing it. That way, the writer looks slow and out of touch.

This being a repub paper, I had to have my say in 200 words or less. Repubs, I suppose don't like to read. Keeping within the word limit was the hardest part.

Thanks again for noticing.

... Pittsburgh loves its Teresa, and is very protective of her.

Unfortunately Mr. Heyl did not bother to check, intent on just finding fault with the book.

Operative phrase. Bashing a book when you don't take the time to read it, skim it... or even Google it to find the very cursory blurb attached to it. :eyes:

As an aside... I'll bet Teresa loved it when Sienna Miller referred to her adopted home as "S***sburgh".

17. I think Teresa
and the rest of us are pretty darned proud of our city, despite the presence of Mr Heyl and the rest of the trib scum. We do have an excellent newspaper, the Post Gazette, here in the burg. The Scaife rag's circulation is nowhere near that of the PG.

From your link, the writer critiques our city:

"I'm sure there's nothing wrong with Pittsburgh, but there's nothing glamorous about Pittsburgh, either. I've never been there myself, and I don't know anyone who has. But that's the point, and there's a reason for that. It's Pittsburgh."
http://www.egotastic.com/entertainment/celebrities/sienna-miller/sienna-miller-pittsburgh-shitsburgh-001740

It's the same damned problem that I have with Heyl trashing the book. If you haven't read it, you can't review it. And if you've never been to Pittsburgh, well, same thing.

BTW, Heyl has written another nasty piece about the Kerrys' book. I won't bother to post it.

18. Writing a review without reading the book
reminds me of a line in a Jimmy Buffett song.

"Don't try to describe the ocean if you've never seen it
Don't ever forget that you just may wind up being wrong."

Kerry's cause

How many reviews is columnist Eric Heyl going to write about Sen. John Kerry's and Teresa Heinz Kerry's new book before he reads it ("Kerrys' book political ploy, GOP analyst says," March 31, and "Global snoring inspired by Kerrys," March 18, PghTrib.com)?

Mr. Heyl has twice claimed few would buy "This Moment on Earth," yet it's been on the amazon.com bestseller list since it was released last Monday. I wonder what it's going to take for Mr. Heyl to admit that many people are buying it.

If he plans to continue giving a "review" every few days, he might even want to pick up a copy for himself. Perhaps a couple for the two gentlemen he quotes in his March 31 piece, as they've obviously not read it either.

As Mr. Heyl is well aware, the Kerrys have been championing environmental causes for a very long time, yet he misleads his readers by suggesting the senator's environmental credentials are some sort of recent phenomenon.

I've read Sen. Kerry's and Mrs. Heinz Kerry's book. It's an inspiring work about real people, their desire to live in a safe and secure environment, and what they're willing to do to ensure it for future generations.

Pittsburgh should be proud of our connection to these two great Americans.
