"Ogonowski announce candidacy for Senate seat held by Kerry"
Oh my, I almost feel sorry for this guy. Still, I bet Senator kerry will consider him an opponent and treat him with respect.

"Emboldened by the results of his first run for office, the Dracut farmer has said Kerry is not out of his league.

Kerry, 64, has $9.5 million in his campaign account, compared to the $65,000 Ogonowski has left over from his congressional run."

1. He needs these $65,000 just for the primary ... and, yeah yeah, he could not win the most
conservative district in MA, running against a non incumbent in a special election (low turnout) and expects to win a statewide election in a presidential election year?

And, in addition, he still need to win the primary first.

3. Another view of this candidacy - he would be preparing for a challenge against Patrick in 2010

The Globe piece is doubtful about Ogonowski's chances against Kerry, but quotes a UMass Lowell political scientist who suggests that a "strong statewide campaign could serve as a springboard for a run for the governor's office in 2010." In other words, Ogonowski--who lost in a bid last year for Marty Meehan's abandoned office--could use a loss against Kerry to build momentum to face Governor Deval Patrick. The logic of gaining name recognition makes sense, but losing your way to the top is a tough way to live (remember the Celtics last season?)
