KERRY TO MEET WITH STUDENTS AT MARBLEHEAD HIGH SCHOOL
BOSTON – Senator John Kerry will meet with a class at Marblehead High School. In late January, students in the school’s Contemporary Issues in Today's World class wrote letters to Kerry about the situation in Darfur and urged the United States to take a more active role in ending the crisis there. Kerry was moved by the concern and activism of these young people and is visiting the calls to personally respond to the students who wrote the letters.
In 2004, Kerry was one of the first to push the Bush Administration to label the genocides in Darfur as such. In addition, over the years he has consistently pushed for an immediate end to the suffering in the region.
“The genocide in Darfur is a tragedy that shocks the conscience of everyone who cares about human rights and human dignity. The United States has a moral obligation to do everything we can to protect the people of Darfur from the widespread killings, enslavement and ethnic cleansing, and I remain completely committed to bringing about a permanent end to these atrocities.”
