Mostly useful article in Globe re JK and Supercommittee
Edited on Mon Nov-21-11 07:19 AM by Luftmensch067
A rare article on this which actually centerpieces and *interviews* JK. Naturally, it must include the obligatory SoS reference!

Kerry blamed the Republican intransigence on a no-tax pledge promoted by antitax zealot Grover Norquist of Americans For Tax Reform. “We have a $1.2 trillion plan that’s sitting on the table, one that addresses the problem in a way that’s real. But they’re insisting now on giving another tax cut to the richest Americans," said Kerry. He continued: “Let me be clear: I’m in favor of tax cuts to the middle class, to people making up to $500,000 a year. All we’re asking is that the richest Americans pay their fair share."

When President Obama was elected, Kerry probably didn’t envision spending the better part of a year squabbling over deficit reduction and entitlement programs. As chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he had a schedule studded with trips to foreign capitals. A politician who has often seemed, bluntly, bored by parochial issues, he has never forcefully refuted the notion that he would love to be the next secretary of state.

Now he is mired in the most domestic of fights - how to balance a runaway budget, how to manage entitlement programs that may represent a looming fiscal nightmare, and how to negotiate with an opposition party whose first priority is making a point, not making a deal.

I couldn't easily access this article without signing in -- not sure if that's the case for everyone...

1. You can read it if you use a link in another post.

but not from the Boston Globe website. I noticed that all it takes is to copy the link from the Boston Globe page and paste it somewhere (like in your browser) to be able to bypass the firewall.

Some firewall the Boston Globe has!

As for the article, it may be because this is a column where the person does not need to pretend objectivity. Though the line between editorial and news article is weak these days, as shown by an article from the other Boston paper trying to show the supercommittee failure should be a career ender for Kerry (really???)

2. It is funny that their firewall is so easilly defeated
I couldn't understand why I was able to sometimes get in and other times hit the wall. I wonder if part of the reason this happens is that they don't want to give up google revenue.

As to career ending, who many times has that paper postulated his career was over or that he was not as influential as the Senator best known for his fashion choices - now a barn coat, then pink shorts - than his policy insights. I think there was a career ending possibility - and that would have been had he done what they likely have praised and broken with his conscience and common sense and voted for any of the Toomey budgets rather than condemning them for what they were. He would have lost all support on the left and the right would still hate him because they do.

I wonder if that paper thinks it a career ended for all the Republicans as well.
