Kerry's Backbone Award from the Progressive Democrats of America

Kerry Receives "Spine" Certificate for Filibuster Effort on Alito
By Mike Hersh, PDA Staff Writer
Washington, DC, February 3, 2006--

In recognition of his leadership of the filibuster against the Alito nomination, the Backbone Campaign, Progressive Democrats of America, the Democracy Cell Project and Democrats.com awarded Sen. John Kerry a "Spine" Certificate. Unfortunately, the filibuster failed.

snip

The Senator was warm and gracious, saying he'd display the certificate among his other awards and photographs. We hope and expect more Democrats in the Senate will step up and lead, giving us more opportunities to recognize their courage and strength in the weeks and months ahead.

Photo and a little bit more: http://www.pdamerica.org/articles/news/kerry-backbone.php

Here's a better photo and more (even see a copy of certificate)at: http://www.backbonecampaign.org/storydetail.cfm?ID=148

edit: this is the first article I've seen about this, unless I missed it before. Love the photo. So cute!

Blue tie, shirt & suit! WTG JK!

1. That's awesome.
I had heard he was getting the backbone award for his filibuster work.
I really do think the filibuster attempt was a great move on the Senator's part for both moral and political reasons.
Congrats to the Senator.

2. Oooh the best part...
Edited on Sat Feb-25-06 07:37 PM by MH1
Is seeing David Swanson's name at the bottom of the card. Remember the nasty email we got from him via Democrats.com, and a lot of us complained and Bob Fertik made Swanson email an apology to each of us?

Not that it was much of an apology. Still...

And okay that really isn't the best part. But it is kinda fun.

On edit: speaking of best parts, does anyone else think our esteemed Senator is wearing the blue tie much more often these days? Methinks we were heard. ;-)

4. Nice catch.
That is a lovely bit of irony, isn't it?

6. Yes, I remember that e-mail. What I wrote back was so nasty they didn't
even TRY to apologize.

Senator Kerry does look good in blue so he probably hears "wear the blue tie" often! Love that blue suit too.

I'm very happy for him. This award must have made him pretty good during a time when he was undoubtedly taking flak from other senators over the filibuster effort. Let him know that there are a lot of folks out here that appreciate his courage and hard work.

7. I agree that it probably felt good at that time to be appreciated
I doubt the flack bothered him that much though. Many of the people most annoyed were annoyed because their why I'm voting no on Alito was political posturing. The filibuster forced them to choose. It may have been more annoying to Kerry that this was important and they could have won and defended the vote as preserving checks & balances (how hs civics can you get). One reason I heard they didn't want a filibuster was they wanted to have the concentration on Republican culture of corruption and need for reform instead.

However, it's only a month later and the corruption issue has long ago run its course. In fact, only Kerry tied the port issue to cronyism. When reform comes, it will likely be a Republican bill. Just as on all the election issues, where we are seeing that Kerry was right, the Democratic party may see that this could have been a rare victory for the Democrats. It would show that we believed in something and I think it could have been presented in a way that it would possibly gain libertarian type votes.

If Kerry was willing to stand against everyone on BCCI, here he had many others and the liberal base with him.

8. EDITED by original poster.

First, all I can say is that your posts are the most responses I have ever gotten from one of my posts. Second I did not realize I was in the Kerry Supporter Forum. Third, I have taken my meds; however, not all of them today. Fourth, I was honestly not dissing Senator Kerry or the forum, I just was not paying attention to what board I was on and made an innocent mistake. However, we are on the same side of the isle which should count for something.

Finally, I apologize... I am a fairly intelligent person most of the time.

Sad that no one ever responds to my posts though! Maybe I should always post in the wrong forums, at least I get a response!

Original post *******
I voted for Kerry in '04 even though I felt he allowed the Karl Rove and his cronies almost completely ruin his reputation. If he wins the Democratic Party's nomination, I will vote for him again.

However, I'm going to support Bidden. He talks the talk BUT sometimes he doesn't walk the walk, but this campaign he is going to have to start standing by what he says, because what he is good with plain speak.

Bidden will get up to make a brilliant speech comment(s), and spell it out as plain as day what the right has done, why it's wrong, then turn around and vote with the Republicans. Senator Bidden had better start changing his ways or he is going to lose a lot of his supporters, including me.

Ahm, are you dissing Kerry, praising Biden or just off your meds today?

What are you saying?

11. Kerry's reputation
is by no way ruined. Those cronies are being shown for what they really are LIARS, each and everyday.

You can support whomever you wish to. But may I remind you that this is the Kerry SUPPORTER group, and we all support Kerry here. (Please read the rules)

If you wish to support Biden, you could see if you could get a support group going for him.

Not sure why you posted here, why you brought this thread back.

But, in any case, thanks! Not for supporting Biden (with 1 d), but because I had missed this thread when it was posted.

Great that PDA recognized that Kerry led the filibuster.

13. If this is the best a supporter can say in support of their choice,
I feel sorry for both them and their candidate. Stick around, actually listen to Kerry - view the Allard response video. That is GREAT plain speech and lists Bush's misdeeds in a sharper, more focused way than I've ever heard. Also, intensely emotional, but dignified, rational and coherent throughout - and his face doesn't turn red like Biden's did when he was ranting over Bolton. As a bonus, Kerry does walk the walk and has for 35 years. (Also, I have heard Kerry question many people for the committees he's on - he doesn't waste 26 minutes on inanities about his own life.

Kerry's reputation will be based on things Kerry has done - not the Rove lies that have been discredited.
