1. Two Girls, is an old picture of mine. It was taken in Asmara Eritrea
from inside a compound where I had a room.

2. Am assuming Absence of Colour means B&W, but
clue me in...PLEASE???

Is this just another way to say Black & White only?

3. I think absense of color could mean
a monochromatic picture shot with color film. An example might be a photo of an egg on a black table. You'd still get that black and white effect.

imo, of course. The contest host, as Grand Pooh-Bah of the Photo Contest, has final say on these matters. :)

I thought Alaska was the only place with the mighty sign hunters.

Yep. The best part is it's a "no hunting" sign, but too faded to read. I took a zillion pictures trying to get the "no hunting" part to show up, then got this idea. :hi:

Took that picture this morning.
I love the way the snow has melted around the buckshot holes in your "Shot". It looks like molded Ice. Excellent! That's definitely not something you see everyday. :wow: :applause:

10. The Theme is a bit ambiguous
If Absence of Colour is interpreted as a monochromatic picture taken with color film, mine doesn't qualify. Mine is a color photo that I reduced the saturation almost to zero, leaving enough of the yellow street light color to give it a sepia tone. If that pushes the envelope too far, I have no trouble withdrawing it (I have a snow scene I can substitute). Can we get a ruling?

Look at the entries so far. Most of them are color photos converted to B&W. I'm sure your entry will be fine.

16. I was going to take a new photo for the contest but...
...I have an old one that I might use instead. I'm kind of discouraged this month seeing as how I used a black and white photo in LAST month's contest and came in 2nd place... but I sure wouldn't use that one again... and ALL the photos this time around are phenomenal!

It also seems like there have been a lot of entries pretty early on... if I don't submit something soon I might not make the 30. Eh, maybe its best to sit it out if that happens, cause I sure can't decide on a photo.

There are only a few more slots left. It's going to be a hard contest, too. There are a lot of really excellent shots in there. I'm very impressed with what this group has come up with. These guys rock.

22. In case anyone is wondering...
Mine is called Phoenix Over the Gunpowder because the bridge is Phoenix Rd, and it is going over the Gunpowder River. That's what I named it when I saved it to my comp, so I decided to keep it that way. :P

I just realized my photo is competing against 5 adorable children, two compelling cats, a one-eyed dog, and dozens of American flags. Now THAT'S tough competition! And we still haven't seen F. Gordon's entry...!

I guess not then. For a while, I kept forgetting to put an image in PhotoBucket. Then, which of my black & white originals to present. Lines & angles or Jackson Pollock-esque.

28. Sorry...
... for being so "absent" last week. :dunce: I've been on holiday, away from computers and internet, so I haven't been able to reply to the questions. But you seem to do very well without me! There are some really great shots up this month! :applause::bounce::crazy:

To clarify on the theme, "Absence of colour" was intended to be a monochromatic theme, but not limited to B&W, and all submissions are within my intention. If anyone is pushing the envelope, that'll have to be "Memorial Day"...

Personally, I'd hoped for more sepia, I just love it! :D So if anyone wants to change their submission, feel free!

And btw, there is still room for one more in the competition!

31. "Pushing the envelope...???"
If anyone is pushing the envelope, that'll have to be "Memorial Day"...

With all due respect, Mr. PitbullTed, that comment surprises me, since I picked that shot specifically because I thought it was more a reflection on "absence of color" than a black-and-white image would be. By having the distant figure in color, surounded by a world devoid of it, I thought I was emphasizing that absence.

Personally, had you described the theme as "monochrome," rather than "absence of color," I would not have even included Memorial Day in my considerations.

I really don't like having it implied that my choice consitituted, if not outright "cheating," at least in some way taking unfair advantage of the rules. Although I would clearly prefer Memorial Day be my entry, if you think it's unfair to include it, please substitute Lincoln's Grave (the second version from my "A Tale of Two Scans" thread) in its stead. The choice is up to you, as the contest administrator.

32. Tis' a bit confusing

Since I'm the jerk who suggested this theme....

"Absence of Color" would be kewl. B&W, Sepia, Duo-Tones, Tri-Tones, Infrared, Selective Color..... anything where color is removed and/or reduced to a minimum ... or just a couple of colors. Or just "Black and White".

Granted, my words were only a suggestion and the host/ess can take said suggestion anyway they want but I don't see anything wrong with Memorial Day.

I don't get all the confusion over this "theme". Lack of color is lack of color is lack of color is lack of color.

:)

35. I think your photo is just fine...
I agree that your limited use of color points out that there is no color in the rest of it... But I don't think PitbullTed is trying to say that it should be replaced either.

Its dumb luck that just about everyone except you (and now mutley_r_us, with the update) used a monochromatic color photo. I used a photo converted b/w then colorized monochromatic blue. I have to admit I wondered if the blue (instead of b/w) would make people vote against my photo simply because of the "absence of color" theme... but I think people are smarter than that (especially on DU).

I don't think saying "pushing the envelope" in this context means "cheating" or "taking advantage" by any means. I think your photo has its own advantage (and depending on the grouping of photos I'll probably vote for your's).

I wouldn't worry about it. PitbullTed has given it his OK, as well as F.Gordon who originally proposed the theme... and I believe that most if not all in the photo group would agree. In fact your photo prompted me to do a concept piece that I have yet to shoot (and obviously too late for this competition) with a TV in color and the rest of the room in b/w.
